Hany Mukhtar named to MLS Team of Matchdate 14

Hany’s back on the TOTM. After a first-half volley and a stoppage-time penalty to account for all of Nashville SC’s scoring, the reigning MVP is back in the headlines:

Mukhtar helped set up the play that led to Jacob Shaffelburg’s earning the game-deciding penalty, breaking in one-v-one with Charlotte keeper Kristijan Kahlina and forcing a save that ultimately rebounded to the top of the box, where Shaffelburg was fouled. His 39th-minute surprise strike on a lofted ball from Sean Davis leveled the score (thanks to a deflected off the chest of centerback Bill Tuiloma) after Charlotte had led since the sixth minute.

In addition to his scoring exploits, Mukhtar completed 21/27 passes, 5/8 in the final third (with one key pass). He had four non-scoring shots, with two forcing Kahlina into saves (including the play that led to the penalty call). He successfull completed 1/5 dribbles, won possession back for his team five times, and was fouled three times while committing two fouls.

This is Hany’s fourth selection so far in 2023 and the team’s ninth. Lukas MacNaughton was on last week’s Matchdate 13 TOTM. Mukhtar and Walker Zimmerman were both named to the Teams of Matchdate 6, 10, and 11 as a duo. Mukhtar was also Player of the Matchdate in Week 11. Zimmerman was also among the honored for the opening weekend of MLS play.
