From League release:
NEW YORK (Tuesday, September 6, 2022) – Nashville SC midfielder Hany Mukhtar was voted the Major League Soccer Player of the Month for August 2022.
Mukhtar became the fourth player in MLS history to record at least 12 goal contributions (seven goals, five assists) in a calendar month, joining Darwin Quintero (12 in July 2018), Diego Serna (13 in June 2001), and Clint Mathis (12 in August 2000). His seven goals led MLS over the span and his five assists were tied for the most with the New York Red Bulls’ Cristian Cásseres Jr. Mukhtar scored or assisted on 12 of Nashville’s 16 goals (75 percent), which were the second most by a team in August. The German midfielder has at least one goal contribution in 12 of his last 13 matches and multiple contributions in six of those.
Mukhtar leads MLS with 21 goals this season, which set a new club single-season record, eclipsing the previous mark of 16 that he set in 2021. The German playmaker has also produced 32 goal contributions (21 goals, 11 assists), which is five more than the next-closest player (Austin FC’s Sebastián Driussi, 27) in 2022. He is the first MLS player to hit 30 goal contributions in a single season since LAFC’s Carlos Vela set the single-season MLS record in 2019 with 49. Mukhtar is the only player in MLS with double-digit goals and assists, and he has scored multiple goals in a match six times this season, which is more than any other MLS player. The midfielder has also produced multiple goal contributions in five of his previous six matches. In three of the five multi-goal contribution games, he recorded three combined goals and assists.
Mukhtar, a 2022 Landon Donovan MLS MVP candidate, boasts 37 goals and 23 assists since the start of the 2021 season. His 37 goals lead all MLS players in that span and the 23 assists rank as the third most behind the New England Revolution’s Carles Gil (31) and FC Cincinnati’s Luciano Acosta (26). Mukhtar’s 60 goal contributions since the beginning of last season are 18 more than the next-closest player (Valentín Castellanos, 42). Of Nashville’s 103 goals over the past two seasons, the German has scored or assisted on 58.3 percent of those.
Mukhtar is the first player in Nashville SC history to be named MLS Player of the Month, and the club is now the 28th different team to have a player earn the honor. He is also the first German player in MLS history to win the award.
Nashville continues their playoff push when they host the LA Galaxy at GEODIS Park on Saturday, September 10 (3:30 p.m. ET, Univision / TUDN / Twitter).
MLS Player of the Month is voted upon by a panel of select national media members in a process conducted by MLS Communications.
A well-deserved honor, and I believe the first time in three years despite his raucous success over the past two. (In the interest of disclosure, I am a voter in the MLS Player of the Month process).
Good for him, and I would imagine he has a more micro honor coming this afternoon, as well.
