With a goal and an assist in a 2-2 draw against Atlanta United, Nashville SC striker CJ Sapong has been named to MLS’s Team of the Week for the 13th matchdate of the season.
Sapong also finished in third for MLS Player of the week, a close battle where he won 27.33% of the fan vote, but only 11.76% of the North American Soccer Reporters media vote.
Sapong opened the scoring with a first-time strike assisted by Hany Mukhtar, then in the second half provided the assist by heading a ball back across the face of goal on a set piece that Mukhtar finished (though it may well have been bound for the net even without Mukhtar there to bundle it home). He also took one other shot (off target), completed 20/28 passes, and was fouled twice.
It is the ninth Team of the Week selection for Nashville so far this season, and Sapong’s first honor. Midfielder Aníbal Godoy and head coach Gary Smith earned the honor in Week One, Walker Zimmerman got the nod after Week Four, Dave Romney and Randall Leal in Week Six, and Romney again in Week 10. Hany Mukhtar joins Romney as the only member of the squad with multiple previous selections, earning the honor in weeks eight and 10.
