After a goal and an assist in just 21 minutes on the pitch – the latter of which was the deciding tally in a come-from-behind win – Nashville SC midfielder Hany Mukhtar has been named to the Major League Soccer Team of the Week for Decision Day. It is the second time the German has been named to the Team of the Week, with the previous opportunity coming in his most recent appearance for Nashville SC in Week 18 – after which he was also named the league’s Player of the Week.
Mukthar joins goalkeeper Joe Willis and midfielder Randall Leal as the only Nashville SC players to make the Team of the Week multiple times during the regular season.
The 25-year old replaced Derrick Jones in the 76th minute of yesterday’s 3-2 win over Orlando City SC with his team facing a 2-1 deficit. He completed 9/12 passes, took two shots, and drew one foul in his time on the pitch. One of those shots was an 88th-minute header that drew the score level at 2-2. His set-piece delivery to Jhonder Cádiz deep into second-half stoppage time saw his fellow Designated Player head it home to deliver a victory for the Boys in Gold.
He finished fifth in North American Soccer Reporters POTW voting.
Nashville SC’s Team of the Week honorees other than Mukhtar include Willis (15 and 22), Leal (Weeks 20 and 21, Week 21 Player of the week), Dax McCarty (Week 11, runner-up to POTW Jordan Morris), Gary Smith (Week 11 coach), and Walker Zimmerman (Week 20). Boys in Gold have also made the “bench” – TOTW runners-up, effectively – four times: Leal (Week 9), Aníbal Godoy (Week 13), Daniel Ríos (Week 14), and Zimmerman (Week 17).
