Nashville SC can’t find goals in rain-soaked friendly loss to New York City FC

NASHVILLE – Nashville SC started steady, then succumbed to the high-powered lineup of New York City FC in a 2-0 friendly loss at First Tennessee Park this evening.

The visitors struck on a 28th-minute penalty kick (following a handball in the box by NSC winger Kharlton Belmar) and a 40th-minute blast from just outside the top of the 18-yard box. It should come as no surprise that two of their designated players, Maxi Moralez and Alexandru Mitriță, scored the respective goals.

After the break, the teams played mostly listless ball, with just a few chances on the goal until late in the contest. Mass substitutions for Nashville in the 62nd minute were countered by a steady stream of City substitutions over the course of the second frame, with backup Nashville keeper Connor Sparrow saving a free kick in the 64th for one of Nashville’s highlights.

The Boys in Gold had chances in the 49th (a Kharlton Belmar cross couldn’t be settled by Alan Winn, and Winn’s lay-off was hit high and wide by Michael Reed), 73rd (a shot from outside the box by new signing Vinnie Vermeer), and 87th (a Lebo Moloto cross found the head of Tucker Hume, but he nodded it high). The best, though, was in the 89th, when Ropapa Mensah received a through-ball from Daniel Ríos and his one-on-one attempt to chip keeper Sean Johnson went high.

Nashville will have to wait until another day to score in front of the home crowd.
