After being reunited with pieces of his Colorado Rapids past in Nashville, assistant coach Brett Jacobs will be getting a different part of the band back together.
He will leave Gary Smith’s staff to join Pablo Mastroeni’s at Real Salt Lake. Mastroeni was the captain of the Colorado Rapids team that won MLS Cup under Smith (with Jacobs on-staff) in 2010, and was briefly the coach in Denver, as well. He was named the headman at RSL this off-season after serving as an assistant to start the year and taking over as interim when Freddy Juarez departed to become an assistant at Seattle Sounders.
Jacobs (who is unrelated to Nashville SC GM Mike Jacobs) joined Nashville SC in 2019, serving as an assistant during the club’s final year in USL before continuing as an assistant in MLS. His departure leaves lead assistant Steve Guppy and goalkeepers coach Matt Pickens on Smith’s staff. A replacement will be sought before the season begins.
