After having a hand in all three goals during Nashville SC’s 3-0 cruise over FC Cincinnati, striker CJ Sapong has been named to the MLS Team of the Week.
Sapong got the scoring going by knocking home a Hany Mukhtar cross in the 13th minute. He then made a nice run and cutback before laying off to a streaking Randall Leal in the 35th, with Leal finishing to credit Sapong with an assist. It was a set piece the third time around, with Mukhtar’s deep dead-ball cross confidently nodded home by Sapong to close the scoring in the 57th. Sapong also completed 12 of his 16 passes and was fouled twice by FC Cincinnati.
This is his first MLS Team of the Week honor in Gold, and after the Chicago Fire’s struggles throughout the 2020 season, it is actually his first such honor since the 2019 campaign. He finished third in POTW voting.
He is the eighth selection for Nashville this season, with Joe Willis getting the nod after Week Three, Alex Muyl and Walker Zimmerman both members of the TOTW after Week Four, Mukhtar after a brace in Week Seven and an MLS-record hat trick in Week 13, Luke Haakenson for his two-goal heroics in Week Nine, and Randall Leal in Week Ten.
