The end of Nashville SC’s season brings about a wide range of emotions, but one of the silver linings to the Eastern Conference semifinal loss to Columbus Crew Sunday evening is that players will be available for the United States Men’s National Team’s game against El Salvador next Wednesday. Falling outside a FIFA window, the friendly match will have primarily players whose MLS teams have been knocked out of the playoffs available .
Nashville SC’s Walker Zimmerman will join the squad – though the 22-man group named is not a complete group, with more to potentially be added. (Benfica’s CJ Dos Santos – who plays for the B team of the Portuguese giant – is the lone exception to the “MLS only” rule thus far).
Zimmerman, 27, has 12 US Men’s National Team caps, with the most recent coming in February – before he signed with Nashville SC – when he started in defense for a 1-0 win over Costa Rica (for whom Randall Leal played on the day). A Best-XI selection last year with LAFC, Zimmerman took his game to another level this year and earned league Defender of the Year honors.
Zimmerman is also known as an offensive threat, with two goals for the national team in his time representing his country, and three for the Boys in Gold this season.
