NASHVILLE – Folks, Nashville SC has officially (unofficially) put the pressure on the Pittsburgh Riverhounds. With a 3-0 halftime lead against Atlanta United 2, the Boys In Gold have a leg up on a first-place finish in the US, Championship’s Eastern Conference. If they see put the final 45 minutes, Pittsburgh will have to beat Birmingham Legion tomorrow to reclaim first place in the East.
Nashville struck first on a corner-kick header from Forrest Lasso, who nodded home Justin Davis’s service through traffic at the goalmouth in the 22nd minute. Striker Daniel Ríos would add a pair, scoring on the 32nd and 39th minutes to become the first-ever player to notch 20-plus goals in back-to-back USL seasons. He remains two behind scoring leader Solomon Asante (22) in the Golden Boot race, however, and may be hungry for more in the second half.
A fellow season-end award aspirant, keeper Matt Pickens, is on track to finish as the Golden Gloves winner, and it’s been an easier go for him, facing only one shot on goal in the first half. Keeping a clean sheet would win him the honor by a wide margin.
Nashville is hungry for more than just individual accolades, though, and while there’s only so much the team can do to chase team goals in the second half, they’ll continue to test what appears to be an overmatched opponent.
