NASHVILLE – Atlanta United 2 is nothing if not exciting – on both ends of the pitch. The Baby Five Stripes try for all manner of exciting attempts on the opposing goal… and give up plenty on their own end, as well. Nashville SC took advantage of the latter in the first half, with Brandon Allen and Alan Winn both tickling twine.

It was Winn feeding Allen in the 19th minute to open the scoring in this one. The youngster used a burst of speed to get deep into the United penalty area, and while his service across the face of goal may not be a play that’s rewarded often, this is the one in which it counted. The ball skipped past Atlanta keeper Justin Garces, and Allen was on the back post to dunk it home and put the hosts ahead.

The game played out relatively evenly before and after that, with the two teams sharing a few opportunities on net (though nothing seriously threatening to score), with Nashville dominating the middle third a bit more.

That all changed deep into stoppage time. A pair of Atlanta United’s best chances came in the 47th minute on corner kicks. While nothing came of the set piece opportunities, Nashville was ready to pounce on the counter. Lebo Moloto pushed the ball in transition, and spread the ball wide to Winn. After a cutback had seemed to slow the ball down too much and allow Atlanta time to recover, Winn made sure it didn’t matter, with his shot beating Garces low to his left, into the side netting.

While Atlanta produced a few exciting moments of their own, the experience and patience of Nashville SC have seemed to be the difference-makers, and the hosts have a 2-0 lead at the break.
