Nashville SC recalls Vinnie Vermeer from loan spell

Nashville SC midfielder Vinnie Vermeer probably didn’t even have the time to hit Fremont Street. His loan spell in Las Vegas has come to and end. From club release:

Nashville Soccer Club announced today the club has recalled midfielder Vinnie Vermeer from Western Conference side Las Vegas Lights FC. The 24-year-old Dutch player did not see any action during his week in Las Vegas.

Since joining Nashville SC on Feb. 22 as a free agent, Vermeer has started in one USL Championship match playing 29 minutes vs. New York Red Bulls II on Mar. 24.

Vermeer didn’t get a ton of time with Nashville, largely because he missed time with an ankle sprain suffered in his first start. With a crowded depth chart in front of him, getting minutes with a struggling Western Conference side in Vegas (the Lights are currently 11th in the Projected Table) seemed the right move.

Vermeer did not make the Lights’ squad for their July 4 game against Los Angeles Galaxy (no surprise, given his loan began just the day before), their only contest during the ephemeral loan spell.

Recalling Vermeer is probably a necessity at this point: Nashville SC was already carrying only six central midfielders (Bolu Akinyode, Derrick Jones, Matt LaGrassa, Lebo Moloto, Michael Reed, and Vermeer). Moloto is a more attack-minded player than the others, who are largely defensive stalwarts – though LaGrassa is among those with a little more offensive bite. Jones has a long-term injury that shouldn’t see him return until later in the season. Meanwhile, LaGrassa and Reed suffered injuries Saturday against Louisville City FC, and their status for the coming weeks is drawn into question. Having Vermeer back in the fold could make him the only available central defensive midfielder to pair with Akinyode in the short-term.

The Dutch midfielder joined Nashville SC after a successful trial in the preseason. The 5-8, 152-pounder is a ball-playing No. 6 whose passing ability and motor are his primary assets.
