As expected after public statements to this effect by CEO Ian Ayre, Nashville SC fans won’t have to wait long to know who will be their team’s inaugural-season MLS coach. The club will make its announcement Wednesday at 10 a.m.
Per ESPN’s Jeff Carlisle, that choice will be current USL head coach Gary Smith. Smith is poised to lead the second season in the USL’s Championship division after guiding the squad to an eighth-place finish and playoff berth in the first professional season for the franchise.
Smith has drawn criticism in some corners of the fan base for a low scoring output last season, though the side’s defense probably benefited from a slightly more conservative approach. With high-caliber signings at the forward position this offseason, the results in 2019 may be more indicative of the long-term future.
